- One of the major issues discussed in the paper is the protest by indigenous groups against the construction of a road in the Isiboro Sécure Indigenous Territory and National Park (TIPNIS). The road would go from the department of Cochabamba to the Amazonian Beni region, thus facilitating the transit of meat and agricultural products. The road would cross the TIPNIS park, which for its inhabitants would be detrimental to the ecosystem and their culture. The so-called "colonists", Quechua and Aymara people, who have lived in the park since the 1970s are, however, favorable to the road as they need to sell their products on the market. The indigenous groups opposed to the construction of the road started a march from Trinidad to La Paz (about 600 km) on August 15. Supporters of the road have created blockades in order to stop their progression. There are risks of confrontation between the groups. For more background information or latest news (Spanish).
- Evo Morales, the President of Bolivia, gave a speech from La Havana (Cuba) in which he denounced the critical attitude of the US towards Bolivia and Venezuela's fight against drug traffickers, stating that their attitude was only due to their ideological differences. He finally pointed out that the US should be the one to be criticized as they constitute the first market for cocaine. More here.
